connecting our Jewish community through sport and wellbeing
As Chanukah and 2020 come to a close, Maccabi across Australia would like to wish all our Maccabi family and friends,
CHAG SAMEACH & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
2020 challenged us all in new ways, lockdowns, social distancing, and restrictions on community sport meant that our organisation was put into a Time-Out and for the first time in our 95 year history, there was no competitive sport and no coming together on the field.
But just like the Maccabees, Maccabi rose to the occasion and found new ways to keep or community connected.
Our focus turned to connecting our community online. We launched the Maccabi Updates website and ran a wide range of webinars on topics including Online Child Safety, Mental Health, Maccabi Sporting Champions and Empowering Women in Sport, to name but a few. We collaborated with Community Organisations like Wolper Jewish Hospital, JCCV and Monash University and connected with over 4,000 people online.
The Maccabi Updates website had over 100,000 views and we reached over one million people across the Maccabi world through our social media channels.
Our clubs worked hard preparing for a COVID safe return-to-play, and our Maccabiah team, led by Head of Delegation Barry Smorgon OAM worked diligently to appoint coaches and managers. Athlete nominations opened last week - nominations can be submitted HERE.
Another first, this year Maccabi Junior Carnival became known as Carnival@Home, with NSW, VIC and WA each holding a COVID safe event in their home State.
Most recently, to celebrate the miracle of Chanukah, we joined over 80 Maccabi Nations from around the world in a special Chanukah Celebration, telecast live to the world from the Kotel.
We are Maccabi PROUD of our Chanukah message that was blasted to hundreds of thousands of Jewish people across more than 80 countries.

A special thank you to Greg Sher and the ISAIAH band for providing Maccabi with a beautiful and unique version of the Chanukah classic Ma Otzur.
ISAIAH are a unique and energetic band specialising in weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, anniversaries, corporate and community events, comprised of some of the most experienced and accomplished musical talents in Australia.
The sheer professionalism and quality of this band are at a level that is hard to match and needs to be seen to be believed.
See the band in action HERE.
Maccabi across Australia remains committed to ensuring that we continue to connect the community through Sport and Wellbeing.
We look forward to a “new” normal and returning safely to sport, activity, family, holidays and a healthy 2021.
With Maccabi greetings,
